LDS Values and the Democratic Party

Personally, reading this article makes me feel uncomfortable, especially after hearing Harry Reid's speech yesterday at the convention. (It's hard for me to see one Mormon so blatantly distort the intentions and character of another in a public discourse when, as a fellow Mormon, I know he knows better.)  I feel like they're twisting the true meaning of one of my favorite hymns into something that it is not.  I was particularly disturbed by this part:

"I'm sure it's that way in both parties," he said. "Many of us are uncomfortable with our party's position on abortion, just as I'm sure there are many Republicans who are uncomfortable with their party's lack of attention to 'love thy neighbor.'"  In fact, Janis said, "the Republican Party is saying that the idea of loving our neighbor and taking care of each other are not good things to be striving for. I'm sure that makes a lot of LDS Republicans pause and wonder if they are in the right party."

What is his definition of "love thy neighbor"?  Never has anyone in the Republican party said (that I'm aware of) that loving our neighbor is "not a good thing to be striving for"!!  This man is equating "love thy neighbor" with "create a government that enforces transfer of resources from those who have more to those who have less".  That is NOT the same thing as "love thy neighbor".  This man judges the Republican party of not supporting the idea of "love they neighbor" simply because we believe that true heart-felt love and charity is a personal quality and not one that can be enforced by government, and that the role of government has more to do with enforcing the environment of freedom and liberty so that true love and charity is able to thrive.

It's true that neither party is perfect.  It's true that there are individuals in both the Republican and the Democratic parties that are imperfect, and some that are very bad, in both parties.  We have to be careful in the Republican party of hypocrites who claim to be a part of our Morality but who personally are quite the opposite.  But when you get down to the fundamentals of the principles we are pushing for, those sought for in the Republican party seem to me to be much more consistent with LDS values than the ones that are being sought for in the Democratic party.  I will concede that historically, the Democratic party had a less extreme view on things, respected personal agency, responsibility and Biblical morality more, and simply stood as a voice for things the government should be doing, whereas the Republican party historically stood for things the government shouldn't be doing.  That in and of itself is not a bad thing -- the government has both vital responsibilities and vital limits, and it's good to have people checking both sides.   But the Democratic party is different now, especially with Obama as their figurehead.  It has begun to completely abandon critical American values that have been with us since the Founding, and adopt the view that the Constitution is "old" and "outdated" because it protects Liberty at a higher priority than Health and Comfort, that it protects Freedom of Religion at a higher priority than Tolerance, and that the Balance of Powers only gets in the way of enacting an Ideology which is becoming increasingly and inconveniently inconsistent with our Founding Documents.

Some members of the church will argue that because the church doesn't endorse any party or candidate that its somehow taboo to declare one political direction right and true and the other perilous and wrong.  On the contrary, it is our duty to do just that.

Concerning David Cameron

When I took AP Comparative Politics my Junior year of high school, Tony Blair was Prime Minister in the United Kingdom. It was 2007, and as we watched "Prime Minister's Questions" each week, I was extremely impressed by the clear and nimble way that Mr. Blair defended his positions and those of his party. He is a charismatic man, and I liked him because he was quick on his feet, and his reasoning was, well, reasonable. I remember wishing that we had "The President's Questions" in the United States, where Presidents would have to defend their policies in front of the onslaught of members of Congress. (However, Bush was president at the time, and that, of course, would not have gone over well)

Moving back to the study of England that year, I remember watching the "Shadow Government" led by David Cameron, leader of the Conservatives, argue with the policies of Tony Blair's government. Biased by my liking of Tony Blair, I didn't like Cameron. He may have been more to the political right than Blair's government, but somehow he came off as a sort of intellectual brat, with quipped words and angry, calculated arguments that made him seem like the angry mother hummingbird that used to live in my backyard, furiously driving away any bluejay or robin that came to rest anywhere on the tree where the hummingbird lived. Cameron had no right to be so critical of a government that was obviously doing such a good job running the country, I thought to myself.

Well, four years pass, and I discover that Blair's successor Brown had been quite the failure, and David Cameron was now in charge of a Conservative coalition in Parliament. I wasn't impressed. When I heard of a wiretapping scandal, and then rumors that people higher in government knew about it, I blamed it all on PM Cameron. I imagined that if he wasn't bad enough as an irritating shadow prime minister, it's only right that he would be corrupt too. Oh, if only they would call another election so Labour could win back it's majority, everything would be so much better!

Well...that was a long story that should have been shorter, but to sum up, I seriously misjudged David Cameron. Recently I've had the opportunity to get to know his positions better, and I've been very pleasantly surprised by a couple of the speeches I've read by him lately. I like British politics because it's so different from American politics. It's more hats off, hands on, versatile, and smaller scale. They're ruling an island closer to California in population (a bit more actually) with actually a lot less land and even more diversity. With the way Parliament is run, and especially with "Question Time" every week, it feels government leaders are more directly responsible to the people. Washington, D.C. is a long ways away when you live in Utah. But in England your PM just lives over in London, and every week he has to stand up and defend his positions to the people. That's a cool way to run the country.

Anyway, so Mr. Cameron gave a speech about the King James' Bible, and I thought it was brilliant. Actually, I accidentally read a speech of his about families thinking, at first, that it was his Christian values speech. It was equally brilliant and very pragmatic. Both articles made me very interested in the man, so I read more than half of the wikipedia page on him. He seems to me to be a solid individual - young (the youngest PM since the Earl of Liverpool, 200 years ago), and very passionate. But he's also a man of decent character. I may be wrong about that when some scandal happens, but the fact is that his speeches are very convincing of this fact, and his words calling for a "responsibility revolution" in England are very stirring to me. In his speech on the King James Bible, he states multiple times that the UK is a nation formed on Christian values, and that there should be no shame in making that clear. His reasoning for the great value of religious principles to the country, including charity, kindness, respect, and virtue, are convincing, and it seems he really did his homework, even quoting his favorite passages of the Bible. His arguments are completely contrary to what the men over at www.thehumanist.org are doing, a site that I found to be very falsely professional. They're anti-religion so they might as well just come out and say it. They want God and all mention of HIm out of their lives and out of the country.

My project in England is going to be more to inform than to evaluate. But I am exercising my "reflexivity" (a term I'm supposed to memorize) by noting that I have a very big point of view about religion. I wish the UK was more religious because I believe the people would be happier if they were. I believe religious beliefs inform moral decisions and support the structure of strong families. I see increasing secularism in the country as a negative change, although I don't believe everyone who is involved in it is an evil person. On the contrary, I believe England is made up of mostly very decent people, and that is why losing religion is so harmful. Even very decent people are highly influenced by their circumstances, and the world today teaches little more than immorality and self service, two principles which only serve to break down society further.

So that's my bias, and I thought I would get it out there. Still, after reading David Cameron's comments on the matter, it's nice to know there are influential leaders in the country that don't feel much differently about religiosity than I do.

A Look at Two Competing Programming Ideologies

In today’s world of science and technology, a couple of competing ideologies have arisen in the realm of computer programming. These two ideologies are held, more or less, by two different camps of people.

On the one hand we have the Computer Scientist.  These individuals came out of the School of Thought which has embraced the computer revolution of the past 25 years, and which teaches that this revolution has led to the pinnacle of programming perfection - the art of Large Scale Software Development, Object Oriented Programming, an assumption that computer memory is cheap and plentiful, and that nearly all problems have already been solved by Logicians and Mathematicians in the Standard Design Pattern collection.  This camp views any deviation from these principles as old, obsolete, and out-of-date.  This is an assumed fact, since a large majority have never spent any significant time programming in any other way than this Software Development ideology that they have been taught.

On the other hand, we have the Engineer or Physicist.  These individuals spend less time in the world of philosophy and abstract logic, and live in a more practical world.  They have real-world problems that must be solved, and ultimately what matters is that the answer is absolutely right, and that it was arrived at in good time.  Or, that the machine absolutely works, and that it won’t break.  These types of programmers are often in circumstances where memory is not plentiful (either because the data sets are huge or that the computer hardware is small, hardened, and/or proprietary), and the efficiency of the algorithm can be the difference between success and failure.

The nature of the problems that these two groups face have resulted in two very different programming philosophies.  Each have their pros and cons, and each is effective for the type of problems they are intended to solve.

The Computer Scientist’s philosophy works well for large-scale projects that are seen and maintained by hundreds of software engineers over several years, and the software used by thousands of users.  The computer hardware is generally standard consumer-level electronics, and the data-set sizes are usually small and easy to work with.  Little bugs or inaccuracies in the software’s operation are inconvenient, but most of the time do not jeopardize the whole project.

The Engineer or Physicist’s philosophy works well for small yet highly complex proprietary projects that will most likely be maintained by only a small group of engineers.  The problem it is designed to solve is extremely specialized, and absolutely must work properly to work at all.  The circumstance of the algorithm is often unusual and specific to the problem at hand, so no assumptions can be made until the problem is understood thoroughly, by which time an efficient process has already been comprehended by the engineers without respect to any pre-defined Standard Pattern.  Thus, any similarity to actual Design Patterns, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

These two philosophies ought to be able to live and work together in harmony.  The problem, however, has been an insistence of many individuals within each of these two camps to stubbornly stick to their own preferred ideology, assuming that their point of view is “Right in All Cases and is Inherently Superior”.  This attitude seems to have affected those in the Computer Scientist camp more than the Engineer/Physicist camp, largely, I think, because of the way each have been taught their field.  Computer Scientists are taught a purely Object-Oriented Programming style with a historical context that emphasizes it as a “new” pattern that replaces and improves upon the non-Object-Oriented patterns of the past.  They then immerse themselves in this Object-Oriented paradigm, and gain little or no experience using the older patterns.  Most Engineers and Physicists, on the other hand, are not given any Object-Oriented education, but are immersed instead in the non-Object-Oriented pattern, with emphasis not on programming styles but rather on results.  The Engineers and Physicists suffer because they miss out on the Object Oriented understanding, but they become very familiar with many advantages in non-Object-Oriented programming.  They comprehend that Object Oriented programming has many advantages in many areas (as their practical experience suggests that all programming styles have their pros and cons), and so respect its use, but lack the experience to utilize it effectively. The Computer Scientists, however, interact with Physicists and Engineers and quickly recognize their lack of Object-Oriented understanding.  Their knee-jerk reaction, therefore, is that the Physicists and Engineers are ignorant and old-fashioned when it comes to programming, because they use what the Computer Scientists have been taught is an inferior programming style.  As a result, many Computer Scientists have little or no interest in learning or appreciating the many pros that non-Object-Oriented programming has in many circumstances.  Thus, the divide perpetuates.

And so, in an attempt to break this divide, let us examine these two philosophies in some detail, highlighting some of the difficulties that arise from enforcing a one-sided point of view.

The Computer Scientist is all about sacrificing for the sake of the software’s “public interface”.  To them, the public interface is the pinnacle of all programming holiness, and must always be maintained.  This means that no matter what the object or function or framework actually does under the hood, it needs to maintain the "face" of being a standard Joe Blow element.  It's all about properly maintaining the facade.  Even if this means bending over backwards and jumping through strange obscure hoops, overriding initialize and deallocate functions, etc, all for the sake of maintaining an interface that the user of the object or framework finds normal.

This, of course, is because it is assumed that there is a huge group of people using this interface that have their own software that depend on its consistency.  This makes sense for large-scale software projects that are in fact used by many different people and entities.

The problem with this, however, is that nobody outside of that framework ever knows really what's going on under the hood.  The Computer Scientist would argue that you "don't care" what's under the hood, because, like I said, if the interface is maintained, then it doesn't matter what happens, even if what actually is happening is completely different then what you'd expect by the normal 'meaning' of the interface syntax.  As long as the result is correct, you shouldn't care, they say.

The Engineer or Physicist, on the other hand, is all about consistency and transparency.  What happens under-the-hood matters -- to obscure what is going on just works against you.  An Engineer or Physicist is sensitive to the validity of a syntactical language.   If the code is written a certain way, then it implies a particular functionality underneath.  If the code is written differently underneath, then it should be written differently on the outside to reflect that difference in operation.  If sacrifice must be made, then conformity should be sacrificed for the sake of being specific and accurate.

The Computer Scientist is also the king of re-using functionality.  Why do it over again if what's already there has already been tested and proven?  And so, a Computer Scientist will sacrifice and program and bend-over-backwards twice as much all for the sake of utilizing already-created functionality.  Don't reinvent the wheel, they say.  You might introduce new bugs, they say.  Who cares if our logic seems upside-down and backwards because we're trying to adapt a functionality to something way different than it was intended?  As long as we maintain the interface, who cares? they say.  These arguments are good arguments, it is true, but only to a certain extent.

The Engineers and Physicists, by contrast, are all about practicality.  If it can be done simply, then do it simply.  If there's a direct way to get the job done right there in that function, then do it directly and get the job done right there.  Enforcing the reuse of code or conforming to the standard pattern is frivolous when it could have been done in a quarter of the time and with a quarter of the code by reworking the problem from scratch in twenty lines of code.  Besides, to do it this way makes it very clear what is being done, because you see it right in front of you.  No need to trace the bug through five different frameworks and fifty different class methods before you find the block of code that actually does the work!  In addition, if there’s a slight variation in how the algorithm should work in that particular instance, then it’s easy to adjust it without unexpectedly affecting how a different unrelated part of the code operates.

The Computer Scientist considers it extremely important to conform to Standard Design Patterns, even if the software ends up being structured differently than the reality the software was designed to serve.  This inconsistency is not seen as a problem because the majority of programmers are so deep in their corner of the software that they don't know or care to know the big-picture purpose.  The fact that the chosen design pattern is “over-kill” for the context of the problem (since the pattern was designed to solve a much wider set of problems than the particular one at hand) is either not considered or is ignored for the purpose of conforming to a pattern that all programmers (it is assumed) already know.  (This assumption is rationalized by a circular proof - defining “real programmers” as those who know and embrace these design patterns, and dismissing all who don’t know them as irrelevant, since by that definition they are not “real programmers”.)

The Engineer or Physicist, on the other hand, is very careful to remember the form and structure of the reality behind the model.  The software must clearly parallel the reality it is designed to work for, for both conceptual clarity and algorithmic accuracy.  Ultimately it is the end goal of the software that counts, and the underlying structure is only created to serve that end.  It is recognized that there may be a standard design pattern for doing this particular thing, but if that pattern obscures the reality behind the purpose of the software, or if it makes the software more complicated then it needs to be, then it shouldn't be used.  If a programmer who is new to the project thoroughly understands the problem (the reality) the software was designed to solve, then parallels between the problem and the software are recognized quickly and easily, allowing the new programmer to quickly become a contributing member of the team.

As this is done, the simplest and most to-the-point solution is preferred.  You see, the big-picture concept behind the code does matter, and the more abstraction and unneeded complication you layer on, the harder it is for the scientist to conceptually maintain the big-picture model.  The fact that the programmer seeks to see the big-picture helps keep the project to a small scale.  And because of its small conceptual ‘size’, the software can be written fast and can go from development to outcome quickly.  The few programmers who work on it understand the project from top to bottom, inside and out, and can therefore modify and change the code quickly, can find bugs in the code quickly, and potential inefficiencies are comprehended and avoided.

The Computer Scientist will rarely attempt to comprehend the big-picture of the software.  Whether this is a result of the software being too big and complicated to comprehend even if they tried, or because the software became that way because they never tried in the first place, is debatable and probably depends on the specific project.  Nonetheless, as a result the Computer Scientist depends on other reference points to maintain code reliability and operation than does the Physicist or Engineer.  Hence their insistence on using Design Patterns.  The fact is, they don’t understand the big picture of the program, but they do understand the Design Pattern and the Public Interface to the incomprehensible blob that is the rest of the program.  So if they maintain the pattern and match the interface, then the software should keep on doing what it’s doing -- whatever that is.

Also as a result of not comprehending the big-picture, the Computer Scientist is hyper-paranoid about unknown or edge use-cases.  They are constantly building into the code every last safeguard against every last possible way that a framework or class or method could possibly be used by an unknown caller to the code.  And since they don’t know what the rest of the program does, then every case is within the realm of possibility.  Certainly, when working on a large-scale project, this is very often the only way to avoid potential bugs.

The Engineer or Physicist doesn't have to be so paranoid.  They have no need to consider every edge case, because they already know who will call the code and how the code will be used.  In response to the Computer Scientist's complaint "But if you call this method this way then the code will crash!" the engineer or physicist will say "But I will never call this code that way.  It's only going to be used in a specific such-and-such scenario, where that isn't an issue."

Both the Computer Scientist and the Physicist or Engineer from time to time find need to write data to disk.  Computer Scientists have many formats that they find themselves partial to, but XML seems to be one that is particularly common in recent years.  If something needs to be written to disk, XML is very often the format of choice.  This is because the format is extremely easy to write a parser for, and is very “object friendly” -- it allows for clear text representations of objects and structures of objects.  It also helps that the classes defined in many standard libraries have built-in XML support.  As a result, many Computer Scientists will default to using XML whenever anything needs to be written to disk.  This is understandable, since a common and unambiguously defined file format makes it easy to allow many different frameworks and programs to read and interpret the file without much adaptation or head-ache.

However, this partiality to the XML format has become so predominate that many Computer Scientists have either forgotten or are completely blind to its negatives, some of which are big problems for the types of applications that Physicists and Engineers encounter.  Take, for example, the fact that generally an XML file must be parsed completely from beginning to end before the data contained in the file can be used.  The file format generally does not support “streaming”, or the ability to read and work on small pieces of the file at a time, without seeing to the end of the file.  (This is because an object being read from an XML-formatted file can’t be created fully in memory until the ending </tag> is reached.  Usually, there is a tag that defines the whole file, the start <tag> at the beginning of the file and the ending </tag> found at the very end.  Nothing is for sure until that ending tag is reached.)  Think about what this means for both speed and memory.  If the whole file must be read in order for it to be used, then that probably also means that the entire contents of the file must be held in memory at the same time.  It also means that the computer must wait for the file to be completely read before it can do anything.  What if that file is 200 GB in size?  What if the computer running this code has only 4 MB of RAM because its a proprietary embedded computer system on a satellite?  Another negative is the percentage of the file that the identifiers take up.  If a particular item in the file is only a few characters in length, then adding the identifier tags could double the size of these files on disk.  That 200 GB file just became 400 GB.

The Engineer or Physicist (as the above paragraph makes quite clear) often has clear reasons to choose to write their files not in an XML-type format but instead as simple lists of numbers or matrices.  These files can be read one line at a time, with the program only needing to hold one line or even one number in memory at a time.  The file only contains the information it needs, so will not be overly bloated on disk, saving both disk space and the time it takes to read the file.  The sacrifice, of course, is clarity.  If the program reading the file doesn’t already know what format to expect, then that information is lost.

There are probably more areas that can be highlighted.  The point is, as computers and technology hold a bigger and bigger influence on our world, the need to understand the engineering philosophies behind all kinds of technological fields will become more and more important.  No one philosophy trumps all, and no one paradigm is superior to any other, as much as each of our Prides want to tell us otherwise.  As people, and as coworkers, let us hope to keep our minds open to new ideas and even old ideas -- always remembering that perhaps, in this case, there was something I missed.  Maybe, just this once, doing it that way is better after all.

Used Car Buying

Used cars worth owning, because, in the end, it doesn't matter what the car can do, but how the car makes you feel when you drive it:

1) 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora: As of today, there is an Aurora selling on ksl.com for $6000. Why should Steven buy a Aurora? Besides being one of the best-looking cars of the 90's, it has a V-8!!!

Question: "What does a V-8 add to this car that a V-6 couldn't already do?"

Answer: "What does the voice of James Earl Jones add to the character of Darth Vader? I rest my case."

2) 1980 AMC Eagle: The first 4WD sports wagon ever!! We're talking a classic car: useful, capable, and rugged. A small car that you can still feel perfectly comfortable driving pretty much everywhere. What's not to like? You could go off-roading and camping and driving in the snow and it'd be awesome!!


3) 1990 Chevrolet C/K 3500 Long bed Duallie Pickup Truck: Cause it would be the best thing ever!!!! You could drive it around all the time and feel awesome and old-school and rugged and manly and sturdy and all those other positive-connotation words that you want to feel like!! People would drive around in their little cars and you could look down on them and laugh and say, "Ha! Not only does my truck's engine have TWICE as many cylinders as yours does, it also has TWICE the displacement!! (7.4L) And still only 230 hp!! Take that, 2.5L 300 hp Subaru Impreza STi!!! I could carry you on my truck bed!! Put my car on yours and I'd smash you!!"
And the engine would have this deep guttural idle that sounds like a 80 year old smoker, and there wouldn't be any headrests either!! You know that's what you've always wanted!!

I filled out an application for a summer seminar program recently. I wasn't sure at the time whether I was going to do it, and I'm still not, but I thought I'd fill out the application and decide later. I found out there was a required 500 word essay. Hmmm...well I decided to write it - answering a question about what I felt was a pressing concern for the country today, why it was important, and how I felt the nation should deal with it. This was the stream of thought that followed. I wrote it very quickly, but I thought it was worthy of posting. Hope ya'll appreciate it:


A pressing current issue that I believe is incredibly significant is the decline in support for the moral decision-making powers of government. More and more, the "establishment" clause included in the constitution is being used as justification to not only keep state and church divided, but to actively discriminate against churches and religious individuals. Separation of church and state, which itself is mainly an idea that was discussed and propagated in letters of Thomas Jefferson, has been interpreted so as to favor the nonreligious few over the religious many. Indeed, the role of government as a body instituted to make laws for the moral welfare of its people is and has been significantly eroded. Except in rare circumstances, the door for legal allowances in areas of moral conduct seems to only swing one way, and the last forty years appear to have seen only the removal of laws prohibiting practices of abortion, sodomy, and gay marriage that society almost universally upheld as destructive less than fifty years ago. Despite this, scientific studies continue to show that religious belief has considerable social, health, and personal benefits. Families composed of a married mother and father are still vastly more stable, productive, and beneficial than those composed of a single parent, unmarried parents, or same-sex parents. Rates of abuse, drug use, crime, and underage pregnancy are significantly higher for children raised in these homes than in traditional nuclear families.

Despite this, government has failed to pull back. Government has, thus far, failed to combat or sincerely address these moral issues in a purposeful way, and the result has been significant harm to society. In contrast, economic "ailments" are treated as number one priority issues. While the economy is indeed very important to the upkeep of a functioning society, is it not possible that the core structures of our families are even more essential in the long run? If the current trends continue, how can we expect responsible leadership to spring from younger generations? It seems difficult to imagine the United States continuing to lead the world forward when the citizens in charge are only making it easier for their children to slide back to the very problems that we have proposed to help the rest of the world overcome.

Government can bring about change. Leaders can pull back. Franklin Delano Roosevelt had the task of readying the country for war at a time when the majority of its members were strongly resistant to the idea. This kind of moral leadership can and must be found today. The virtue of the citizenry was what counted most in the minds of the writers of the Federalist Papers. The same is still true for this nation. By rolling back laws that have made more allowances with new ones that will allow only few, the virtue of the citizenry can be positively influenced by the government. The government has a responsibility to the people to encourage decency, responsibility, and morality. It is time to begin acting on it.

My Take On Homosexuality

It is a big issue these days, so I thought I'd organize my thoughts.

There has been evidence (at least I've heard there is some though I can't link to it) that the state of Homosexuality can be seen in the brain. When exposed to certain stimuli the brain reacts in certain ways, showing that there is a true biochemical reaction to go along with the name it has been given. What does it prove? That homosexuality exists, and that its existence can be verified scientifically.

Do I think that people are born with it? I think it is possible, but what I believe to be more probable is that the tendency is born into people. Given certain environments and stimuli the tendency can remain dormant. Given other environments and stimuli the brain will begin to react to those stimuli in what is now called a "homosexual" way.

I think that given these conditions homosexuality can be compared pretty fairly to say, depression. Are people born with it? I don't think so, but I do believe that their brains are wired in certain ways so that the tendency is there, and given certain stimuli, conditions, and stressors the brain will begin to react in certain ways so that a person's mental state can be defined as depressed. The existence of depression can be proved through the manifestation of its symptoms, and analysis of how the brain works. It can be verified scientifically.

That being said, we know that depression (as a manifestation of how the brain is working) is not an ideal or natural condition for a brain (or person) to be in. Constant fatigue, apathy, pain (all over), and suicidal thoughts are just a few ways in which depression effects every day life. It would be considered ridiculous inhumane to tell people that since depression exists (it can be identified scientifically) it is an ideal or acceptable way to live. Should we tell those with depression or other mental ailments that they should expect to be sad, and that is the way they were meant to be, and who they are? Should we encourage them to be depressed just because that is how their brain currently works? The answer, I believe is obvious. Yet, when confronted with the issue of homosexuality society employs a double standard much to the detriment of those who could be helped. We do a great disservice to either group when we tell them that what they are dealing with is normal, or even ideal.

Don't get me wrong. I do not believe that those who are born with the tendency for homosexuality are any more to blame (for that tendency) then those who are born with the tendency toward depression. It is how their brains came wired, and it not something that they could control. However, I do believe that each group can decide how to deal with it.

I do not believe that we should deny work to those who deal with homosexuality. I think they should have hospital visitation rights, and (if they are in a stable living arrangement with their partner) that they should be able to have insurance plans together. We should treat those who deal with homosexuality with as much kindness and respect as we would with any other person who deals with any other issue. Marriage has always been a union between man and woman. Marriage (given what it is) is as available to those who struggle with depression as those that struggle with homosexuality. That right is available to them as it is to any other man or woman. Any other union or binding agreement between partners is not marriage, and it should never be described as such.

What makes me think this way? I have known people who have lived the homosexual life and been a "homosexual," who have later married and found love and marriage with one of the opposite sex. I have friends who are "gay." I believe them to be generally good people (like I am a generally good person,) who are nonetheless deceived about the true nature of their condition. Perhaps most importantly I have the tendency toward depression. I know what it feels like to be different, and not to fit in. Sometimes even the simplest of relationships and activities are colored by this, but I will not let it rule me. There are steps I (and others like me) can and do take to overcome. A tendency toward depression does not mean that I cannot be happy, only that I must take care of myself.

An Entertaining Application Essay

Hey everybody, I read this again recently, and I still think it's pretty funny. It is my friend Grant's BYU college application essay. He's currently in the Missionary Training Center, and when he says he speaks spanish he's not lying - his skills cut his 11 week stay at the MTC to 4.

He tempered his final draft a bit, but here's the original version :-)

I have studied extensively in the arts. I have earned the Sterling Scholar Award for Brighton High School in the area of visual arts. I have studied in music for many years, and have learned to play the piano, guitar, and the Navajo Wood Flute. I can cry on queue. I have participated in community service, and have achieved the rank of Eagle in the Scouting program. I am a certified Black Belt in Tae Kwon Doe. I have two aunts who are 1/8th Navajo, a full Taos Pueblo Uncle, a full Goshute great aunt, and my sophomore crush is 1/8th Cherokee. I am Swedish. I have participated and lettered in Track and Field, served as a Cross Country Captain, finished first in JV Region Wrestling, and can cut my own hair without a mirror. And I never lie. I am an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and live its values. I don't drink, do drugs, or smoke, and as such, I am healthy, on track and on task. I love trains. I am a bright, capable, and hard working student, and am a good representative of the values that BYU is governed by. My palms do not sweat. I have an unusual ability to understand many things in many fields, and as such, I have cultivated my talents broadly, developing a wide range of skills. I speak a lot of Spanish, and am fluent in Pig Latin. I am spirited and friendly, and get along well with all types of people. I can count to three using only two fingers. Today I was very disappointed upon learning of your decision to publicly oppose the Proposition 8 resolution. I would like to communicate to you my deep sadness that you have made such a decision. I am currently a college student, and for many years I have always supported and loved your company and its products. I respect Steve Jobs immensely for the many contributions he has made to the world and to society, while at Apple and also at Pixar. Generally, Apple has advocated ideals which are friendly to moral and religious people, and to those who feel that the family is an immensely important part of a healthy society.

Today, Apple has decided to oppose a resolution designed to protect the family from one of the largest affronts it has ever faced. Please understand that I do not wish to be discriminatory in any way toward those who choose a homosexual lifestyle. However, one must also understand that while there are certain lifestyles which the government should never discriminate against, there are also certain lifestyles it should never condone, especially if it would damage the very fabric with which our society is composed. Each citizen in this country is born to a mother and a father, and ought to be raised in an environment which would give them the greatest chance for happiness and success. This environment, time and time again, has been shown to be a healthy family with both a mother and a father. The government has an obligation to condone and support such units of society, and does so through the institution of marriage. If Proposition 8 were to fail, it would further infringe on children’s right to be taught the proper and correct moral principles of morality and chastity, and would further deprive them of role models whose example is honorable to follow. Many children would grow up with the false impression that homosexuality is as normal and proper as a marriage between a man and a woman, which it is not. People who choose same-sex partnerships are already fully within their legal rights to do so, but for the good of our society, it is imperative that the government only condone traditional marriage.

I hope you understand my deep disapproval of this action by Apple, and also understand that there are many thousands of Apple costumers and employees who have the same view. I hope Apple will make a better choice in the future.

Beyond the Space Shuttle: Rouge Scientists have a better plan

...and they need our help to spread the word...


What problem would be so important that NASA scientists and engineers would be willing to work independent, unpaid, on their own time, to find an alternate solution?

For the last two years those familiar with and interested in space, science, and technology (like me) have heard and have been excited about the development of a new rocket, one planned to not only replace the Space Shuttle, but also to eventually return to the moon. This project is called "Ares", with the two designations, "Ares I", and "Ares V", being the names of the two rockets being built. Upon hearing about it, I thought the plan was done, the course was set, and NASA and the scientific community's mind was made up. It seemed like a good idea to all-- or so I thought.

A couple weeks ago I learned about something that has radically changed my view of the Ares project -- it is that there is a problem big enough with the Ares project that at least 57 NASA and some other independent scientists and engineers are willing, unpaid and during their free time, to develop an alternate proposal to that of Ares, called Jupiter.

Wow -- that caught my attention. However, the first article I read didn't give a whole lot of details, and primarily gave NASA's point of view on the issue. But since learning more, I'm beginning to understand where these scientists are coming from.



The issue is political

I have noticed that many articles about the Jupiter project miss the whole reason these scientists are doing what they're doing. Many of the articles emphasize that the proposed Jupiter design claims to be "safer" and "cheaper", which is true. But if all these scientists had was a safer and cheaper design, would that be sufficient cause to risk losing their job over? Nobody is doubting that NASA is capable of building a safe and operational rocket, that can do everything they have outlined it to do. The real issue is political. These 57 scientists strongly believe that if NASA were to go the direction they are going now, and then lose political backing half-way through, then America would end up losing much of our space program's infrastructure that is in place today. We would be set back to the days prior to the Space Shuttle!

The original plan of the Ares project was to reuse tried-and-true technologies in a new form so to be a new and more capable rocket then we've had before. However, it hasn't happened quite like that. The Ares design today is much different than the Space Shuttle, and uses many technologies which are new or still in development. It's different enough that many aspects of the current shuttle, such as the shuttle launch-pads, manufacturing processes, etc., in addition to the skills and knowledge of experienced engineers on these topics, will all be replaced. If at the point of transition political backing was lost, that is where so much would be lost. Also realizing that these changes are causing the completion date of Ares to be pushed all the way to 2015, and realizing that Ares requires the development of two rockets, not just one, the chance of losing political backing is too big for comfort.

Instead, these rouge scientists have come up with an alternate plan. They propose to do what we were going to do in the first place -- stick with what we have: the space shuttle parts that already have established designs and fabrication plants and experienced engineers to support them. Use those parts and build us a rocket that does the exact same thing as Ares! And we'll build ONE rocket which can fulfill the purpose that the two Ares rockets fill, cutting development costs even further. These scientists have a preliminary design, and have named their concept "Jupiter". Yes, not only is it a bit safer, but the important thing is that it'll be developed faster and with smaller development cost, thus having a far greater chance of being completed within the timeframe of political support! In addition, it offers to maintain the vast majority of the current infrastructure of engineers, manufacturing facilities, launch pads, and other important parts of the space program. It also offers to do with one general rocket design what the Ares project intends to do with two. All in all it has a far greater chance of overcoming political hurtles.

More and more people need to know about this project, because for the good of our country's space program, this proposal deserves a full-fledged review by NASA. So far it has only received an unofficial review, and in some cases NASA is simply ignoring it. Maybe NASA knows what they're doing, and for reasons unknown to the outside public there are better reasons to stay with Ares. But on the other hand, maybe NASA just doesn't want to lose face when their much-publicized Ares project is abandoned! Either way, the answer will only become apparent after a full official review. After so much work, unpaid, and putting their own jobs on the line, these scientists deserve it.

How important is the iphone?

There has been a lot of hullabaloo about the new apple iphone. The world of technology is full of over the top hype. The Segway is a perfect example. It was claimed that it was going to "Change the world". In reality, it has become a very good niche product for those who can afford it. The palm pilot had its day when everyone wanted an electronic organizer. Today they have been superseded by the blackberry smartphone. However, countless people have abandoned the electronic world and have returned to pen and paper after an unexpected crash erased all of their data. Amazon's Kindle device (an e-book reader connected to a nation-wide wireless network) is another hyped device that claims it will change how people read books forever. The kindle has repeatedly sold out, but I don't know anyone that has one and most people don't even know what it is.

Which brings us back to the iphone. Is the iphone another fad, or is this a product that is here to stay?

Maybe we should look at electronic services/products that have changed the world. The first three that come to my mind are to personal computer, the internet, and the cell phone. The personal computer has allowed individuals and companies to manage an incredible amount of data on a regular basis. The internet has allowed everyone to pass that incredible amounts of data to anyone that wants or need it. There is no question that these two inventions have transformed the world economy.

The cell phone has had just as profound but different effect on the world. There is no question that cell phones have effected business, but the major impact has been on the individual. Most people in the world have no need for a personal computer. I known that sounds ridiculous, but it is true. Only in richest countries in the world do normal people own a computer. Everyone else uses internet cafe's. However, most of the world has a need for a cell phone. We recently passed the 50% mark in worldwide cellphone use. Over half of the world's population has a cell phone. That is very remarkable. Round that to 3 billion and it is easy to see that even 1% market share means 3 million phones. With the stakes that high, the competition will be more fierce than ever, which means that consumers will get better products.

This is where the new and improved iphone comes into the picture. Up till now, phones have thrived on variety. Some basic features are common to most cell phones, but their implementation can be quite different. Every phone essentially had its own operating system. You are lucky if you can move contacts and ringtones over to a new phone, don't even think about software.

What it comes down to is that these phones are accessories to the real package, the network. It is network that allows serious business to take place, not the phone. This is all fine and dandy until someone invents a phone that people actually can do things on. The blackberry was the first phone to really do this, but it was limited. Internet was second class and the variety of software available was limited.

The iphone changes this. Suddenly, the internet is the real internet, and starting in July, developers can make all sorts of software for the iphone. The iphone is no accessory. It has the potential to be the main course, a heavy lifter, dare a say it, an essential tool.

The development of the cell phone is almost the reverse of the personal computer. The personal computer had spreadsheets, games, word processing, and more, but until the internet came along to connect them all, they were of limited interest.

The cell phone has always been on the network, but very limited in what it could do on the network, beside talking, and more recently, texting. The iphone combines a computer, the internet, and the cellphone. It is a platform that can explore the limits of what a pocketable, networked computer can do– and the sky's the limit.

Global Warming and the Rise of a Hero

I think I've finally figured Al Gore out. It took a while, but I think I finally understand.

I was reading an article today (found here) about Al Gore and his "grand vision" for America to become "carbon free" within the next ten years. According to the article, this action will "solve global warming, end U.S. dependence on foreign oil, and rein in energy prices". What caught my attention was that it will "solve global warming"!

Solve global warming! The problem which, according to the National Geographic "presents the greatest test we humans have yet faced"? One which will supposedly bring death and destruction and storms and rising ocean levels, all caused by the huge amounts of carbon dioxide that people are releasing into the atmosphere! Wow, to solve that is quite an accomplishment.

Realize, that I am not arguing that the whole global warming idea is a hoax, necessarily, or that it's not really real. Certainly, to a reasonable degree carbon emissions by people has affected the environment and evidence shows that to a reasonable degree reducing our carbon emissions will have a positive effect. I agree. But let's GET REASONABLE about this! For one thing, ASSUMING AL GORE IS RIGHT, and that Global Warming is a horribly important issue for the world to address, then what effect will America, which releases a FRACTION of the world's man-made carbon emissions, have, EVEN IF it was to become "carbon free"? Let's see... man's emissions of carbon already are a very small fraction of the total output in the world (a lot comes from volcanoes and other sources), and America is a fraction of that... so America becoming carbon free, reducing the total output by a fraction of a fraction... that will SOLVE GLOBAL WARMING! Yes! We did it! And it was all thanks to Al Gore. He's our hero.

So this is what I was thinking... maybe Al Gore came up with this pretend crisis (Global Warming), so we could all come to a pretend solution, so that when in the end all the catastrophes don't happen, it'll all be Al Gore's doing, and we'll all raise him up as a hero and a world leader and .... you get my drift.

Anyway, just a thought.

P.S. The other two reasons, "end U.S. dependence on foreign oil and rein in energy prices" are far higher on the priority list. We should focus on those. And becoming "carbon free" would definitely help in those two areas a great deal. However, becoming "carbon free" so suddenly, economically speaking, is probably not the best option. The best course of action economically probably involves using energy sources which do emit carbon to a certain degree, but perhaps and hopefully less than today.

Another small thought -- all the Global Warming advocates speak up wind and solar energy a lot. But my understanding is that current technologies don't really make just those two sources of energy a feasible option, as they may only create a small fraction of our needed energy even with a lot of focused effort. Is this true? Am I right that in fact nuclear energy is the best option for our future energy needs? Or can wind and solar really do it on their own?

And what about the other problem I've heard about-- that the high demand global warming has created for ethanol is causing grain-farmers to create mainly corn, therefore making a shortage of other grains such as wheat. Is this true? What effect will that have on our economy?

It's been quite the long while since anything's been heard of on this blog! Personally, I've had one of the most busiest semesters I've ever had, and finally it's over. Then after that I just hadn't had a chance to be back and to post something. I need a subject that really "gets my goat", if you know what I mean, one I feel deeply about. That's the purpose of this blog, I think -- to have a place where I can speak my opinion on topics of great import, where there's some wrong not righted or something of that nature.

I hope to return with some new posts sometime in the near future, so keep your eyes peeled! :-)

O Say, Does that Star Spangled Banner Yet Wave?

This morning I was walking up onto campus, it was a beautiful day. Clear blue sky, brisk fall weather, bright sun shining over the mountain. I saw sticking up over one of the campus buildings the United States Flag waving with majestic brilliance. It was a beautiful scene. The words and music of our National Anthem came into my mind, "Oh say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?" Can you see it? The flag that was flying last night, which we saw in the last dim light of the evening? Is it still there? The flag which represents the hope of this people? And then I remembered the words near the end of the verse, "O say, does that star spangled banner yet wave?" Tell me! Can you see it?

I think of today's world, of the rising division between good and evil, moral and immoral. The future of this nation, and the impact each individual citizen's moral integrity has on the outcome. And I ask, "O say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave?" I believe this upcoming Presidential Election is among the most important elections in the history of this Nation. It represents a crossroads, a choice our nation has to go one of two radically different directions, with radically different consequences. Will we or will we not continue to be a light upon a hill, shining forth to all nations? Will we continue to be the hope of the world, a symbol of truth and freedom? Do we remember our duty like our fathers did during World War II or our grandfathers did during the Revolution? Or instead will we become passive and apathetic, falling selfishly into ourselves, loving only comfort and vain pleasures, forgetting our blessings, neglecting our responsibility, and then without realizing it, loosing what we hold dear?

O say, does that star spangled banner yet wave
O're the land of the free, and the home of the brave?

Does it? Answer me now! Does it?

Comments; Climate Change

You know, it's hard being the younger brother of two college-attending, politically-aware jargon geniuses. Especially since you can tell that they spent some time spinning their elegant essays into streamlined, direct messages that read like a college textbook on steroids.

Ok, they're not exactly like that, but it's sure intimidating to try to write a post about anything when you're afraid you'll look like a wimp trying to fit in next to these guys.

I don't exactly have anything profound to say about modern neighborhoods, green cars, or futile research projects, but the other day I read the National Geographic article concerning climate change. All in all, it was actually a well-thought argument that was written in very reasonable terms. You can all read it here.

However, I have two reservations:

1. The article states that CO2 at 450 parts per million in the atmosphere is a threshold we should respect. But how does he measure that argument with the one I've heard from those that don't believe global warming: that there is evidence of ages where the CO2 level was ten times what it was now, and that there is little or no evidence of there being global disasters on a massive scale? I have yet to see a side-by-side analysis of the two arguments.

2. The author, to my astonishment, claims that "in the end, global warming presents the greatest test we humans have yet faced." Are we still so blind as to think that our greatest threats lie in our physical destruction? This incredibly bold claim is clearly just a gimmick meant to scare people into taking global warming seriously. That phrase alone undermines my ability to believe the rest of the article. I find it ironic to contrast this author's opinion to the Bible, where God flooded the earth and physically destroyed every living thing in an act of mercy - to protect the righteous, and to give a chance for those still in heaven to be born into a righteous family. Even if another big storm is coming, I believe we need to put cleaning up our act before cleaning up our air. There are many things more terrible than death.

Research Paper? Or Not?

This world is full of unneeded and unfounded controversy. How often do we find this today in newspapers and on cable television? Every day reporters take a clear cut and straight forward story and then dig up the most improbable doubts, blow them up to a thousand times their original size, and then ask, "Or is it?". The Fox channel convinced thousands if not millions of Americans that NASA never did land a man on the moon, that it was all a hoax (1). Al Gore has stirred up the Global Warming controversy, partly with the help of misinformation (2). Millions of Americans have an unfounded fear of nuclear energy, mostly as a result of fear and ignorance.

O assigner of my research paper, are you expecting me to come up with some biased preconceived thesis, and then proceed to misrepresent scientific studies in an attempt to back up my claims? To require a solid "argumentative" thesis with hardly the knowledge of a few half-understood scientific publications, and then assume my conclusion will have some factual basis in reality, or do any good for the world is a very unreasonable assumption. I will only argue what I firmly believe to be right, after clear and honest study and research.

The problem is, I don't have the time for that kind of research. I don't have the knowledge at this time to write such a paper. I need a good grade in this class. So here I am, preparing to stir up yet another unfounded controversy...

Communities of the 21st Century

Cars, cars, cars. We love them, we drive them, we develop asthma from their exhaust, and we waste an unbelievable number of hours sitting in them. There is a better way, but it is going to take some work. The real problem is that we have built our communities in such a way that it is very difficult to get along without a car. We've created a vicious circle of need and demand, and now we must live with the daily commute to wherever we need to be. Stores, schools, and workplaces are all just too far to get to easily by walking. Modern roads are not friendly to bicyclers and public transportation just takes two long. Now American's are fatter then ever and consume more resources per capita than just about everybody in the world. American's pollute more than anybody, and we've been getting away with it simply because we are so spread out. What a sorry state of affairs.

Things are going to have to change, but how? Even though many environmentalist would like us too, Americans are not going to voluntarily slow down, let alone reverse, economic growth for the sake of environmental concerns. We want to have our cake and eat it too.

China, on the other hand, is discovering that if they build their economy the same way America has, they won't have enough good air to breath or water to drink. This difficult truth is starting to sink in. As a result, China is at the forefront of a new paradigm shift. They have chosen to invest in communities that will be "sustainable." It makes good sense to replace what you consume, but historically we haven't done a good job. We've always depended on the environment to clean our air, clean our water, rejuvenate the soil, provide animals that we can eat, and keep this world of our a nice place to live. Now there are so many of us that natural cycles can't keep up. This is something that we like to ignore, and we do a reasonable job of doing so in the US. China doesn't have the luxury.

China is investing in an experimental city called Dongtan. This metropolis will contain half a million people, and do so without tearing down the environment around it. People will live close together so they can share resources and access public transportation. Open spaces will be preserved and power will come from renewable sources. This dramatic effort for developing the ideal 21st Century City is not limited to China. Smaller communities with more modest goals tuned to American sensibilities are also in development. Daybreak Community near Salt Lake City, Utah, is another effort to make cities better. With store, homes, workplaces, and schools all within walking distance, this community hopes to drastically reduce the need for cars. Bike trails and sidewalks wander around homes, parks, and open spaces. Water and power are conserved through good engineering and design. You can read more about it right here:

These communities are not just about saving the environment, they are about recapturing what it means to be a community: where everyone knows their neighbors, and no one feels like a stranger. These communities are bound to have problems, but problems will be overcome and improvements made. I feel that these efforts will bear valuable fruit and future generations will live in communities that are more sustainable, friendly, and beautiful than anything we've ever dreamed of.

What is the Good Life?

A few months ago I thought of an interesting analogy that concerns the challenges of our world. I, for one, have seen how people in newspapers, magazines, Hollywood, in the media in general try to deceive people into leaving the straight and narrow, under the illusion that doing so will lead to an "exciting and liberated lifestyle". Hopefully, this piece will help exemplify how wrong this concept really is:

You are starting on your way home from a vacation far away, and as you reach the highway, a handsome, well-dressed man standing next to an intersecting dirt road waves you to the side of the road. You stop, curious, and the man asks you where you are going "I'm heading home of course - about a hundred miles down the road", you reply. The handsome man's looks suprised. "Why on earth are you taking the road?" he replies, a hint of exasperation in his voice. "Why wouldn't I?" you ask, confused. The man's face becomes angry. "You're telling me you're going to let yourself be restricted to this thin strip of pavement for your entire drive home? Where is your independence, your sense of adventure?
